The Hollings Building, part of Manchester Metropolitan University, is a standout example of mid-20th-century modernist architecture. Designed by Leonard Cecil Howitt and completed in 1960, it was originally home to Hollings College, which focused on domestic science and catering. Its unique hyperbolic paraboloid frame earned it the affectionate nickname "The Toast Rack". The design emphasises functionality, with large windows flooding the interior with natural light, ideal for its original educational purposes.
A symbol of post-war optimism and innovation, the Hollings Building has become an iconic Manchester landmark. Recently restored, it now serves as a modern academic and creative space while retaining its historic charm. The "Toast Rack" remains a beloved piece of Manchester’s architectural heritage, blending 1960s modernist style with contemporary relevance.
