New York is the most populous city in the United States. It exerts a significant global influence upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The history of New York begins around 10,000 BC, when the first Native Americans arrived. By 1100 AD, New York's main native cultures, the Iroquoian and Algonquian, had developed. European discovery of New York was led by the French in 1524 and the first land claim came in 1609 by the Dutch. The streets of lower Manhattan developed organically as the colony of New Amsterdam. It was renamed New York when the British took it over from the Dutch in 1664. The roads were a mixture of country lanes, short streets and Native American and animal trails without any overarching order until around 1800 when the Common Council of New York began to assert authority. The Commissioners' Plan of 1811 was the original design for the streets of Manhattan above Houston Street, which put in place the rectangular grid plan of streets and lots that has defined Manhattan to this day. It has been called "the single most important document in New York City's development," and the plan has been described as encompassing the "republican predilection for control and balance ... [and] distrust of nature." The Plan is arguably the most famous use of the grid plan or "gridiron" and is considered by many historians to have been far-reaching and visionary.
The building form most closely associated with New York City is the skyscraper, which has shifted many commercial and residential districts from low-rise to high-rise. Surrounded mostly by water, the city has amassed one of the largest and most varied collection of skyscrapers in the world. The art deco Chrysler building is considered by many historians and architects to be one of New York's finest. The character of New York's large residential districts is often defined by the elegant brownstone rowhouses, townhouses, and shabby tenements that were built during a period of rapid expansion from 1870 to 1930.

Glasgow School of Art's Mackintosh Building, "The Mac" or "Toshie" as it is commonly known, was voted Britain's favourite building of the last 175 years in a 2009 RIBA poll. It has been at the heart of the Glasgow School of Art's campus. Building work was started in 1897 to a design created by the school's most famous alumnus, Charles Rennie Mackintosh. He was a leading proponent of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements in the United Kingdom. The Mackintosh Building is his masterwork. Unfortunately it was consumed by fire recently and its future is uncertain.

Venice is an Italian city situated on a group of 117 small islands separated by canals and linked by bridges. The name is derived from the ancient Veneti people who lived in the area in 10th century. It is thought to have been founded by refugees from the countryside fleeing Germanic and Hun invasions. Its strategic position at the head of the Adriatic sea helped in its developing into a city state and a major naval and commercial power. It was an important centre of commerce and art from the 13th to the 17th centuries. By the late 13th century, Venice was the most prosperous city in all of Europe. During the 18th century, Venice became perhaps the most elegant and refined city in Europe, greatly influencing art, architecture and literature.
The buildings of Venice are constructed on closely spaced wooden piles. Most of these piles are still intact after centuries of submersion. The foundations rest on plates of limestone placed on top of the piles, and buildings of brick or stone sit above these footings. The piles penetrate a softer layer of sand and mud until they reach a much harder layer of compressed clay. During the 20th century, when many artesian wells were sunk into the periphery of the lagoon to draw water for local industry, Venice began to subside. It was realised that extraction of water from the aquifer was the cause. The sinking has slowed markedly since artesian wells were banned in the 1960s.
It is an extremely beautiful city with setting, architecture and art all contributing. The lagoon, that stretches along the shoreline, and parts of the city are listed as a World Heritage Site. Venice has a rich and diverse architectural style, the most famous of which is the Gothic style. Venetian Gothic architecture is a term given to a Venetian building style combining use of the Gothic lancet arch with Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The style originated in 14th-century Venice, where the confluence of Byzantine style from Constantinople met Arab influence from Moorish Spain.
This 3d map of Venice, at a scale of 1:5000, is centred on the Canal Grande. It is a single resin tile measuring 30x30cm encapsulated in an oak frame. The model can wall hang or be displayed on a desk or table top.
