London is one of the world's oldest great cities. It grew from three centres: the Roman settlement in the 1st century on the northern banks of the Thames, now known as "the City"; Southwark on the southern banks; and Westminster upstream. London expanded rapidly. The Great Fire of 1666 led to the proposal of many radical rebuilding schemes but these came to little. Instead London was rebuilt piecemeal driven by capitalism and housing demands. London's population passed one million by 1800 and had reached 6.5 million a century later. Its structure is immensely complicated and there is little discernible form. Unsurprisingly it is not characterised by any particular architectural style with its buildings having been amassed over such a long period of time.

This 3d map of London, at a scale of 1:5000, is of "the City" - London's hub of trade, commerce, and banking. It is a single plaster tile measuring 30x30cm encapsulated in a perspex frame. The model can wall hang or be displayed on a desk or table top.

NOTRE-DAME DU HAUT (M)

5in high, 8in wide, 4.5in deep & 3lb approximately.

Chapelle Notre Dame du Haut was designed by the legendary architect Le Corbusier. It was built in 1955 and serves as a Roman Catholic chapel. It is located in Ronchamp.

The building is spectacular with a sculptural expressive style. The curved roof is of particular note, it has been described as "peeling up towards the heavens". Also of note are the irregular walls and the sporadic placement of the windows.

Once inside light and sound take centre stage - flooding the chapel and giving visitors a unique religious experience.

We have modelled three sides of this wonderful building.

HILL HOUSE (M)

7.5in high, 7.5in wide, 2in deep & 3lb approximately.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh's most famous and beautiful domestic commission was Hill House. Set high on a hill in Helensburgh, this architecturally eclectic house overlooks the river Clyde. The building is unmistakable due to Mackintosh's completely asymmetrical design. Consisting of numerous different roof levels and shapes, with the exterior derived from the interior planning - the house is truly unique. It was built for the Scottish publisher Walter Blackie as his family residence. Mackintosh was responsible for almost all aspects of the house from the exterior to much of the furniture and internal fixtures and fittings. The house is now maintained by the National Trust for Scotland. The Landmark Trust keeps the top floor available for holiday lets, well worth a visit!

BATTERSEA POWER STATION
BATTERSEA POWER STATION

11in high, 8in wide, 2in deep & 3.3lb approximately.

Battersea Power Station, built in 1933, had been crumbling away since shutting down over 20 years ago, but is now once more resplendent after restoration. This building, with its instantly recognisable chimneys, is a true London landmark and worthy of the term 'iconic'.

Our architectural sculpture of Battersea Power Station's Northern Chimneys is striking. It displays the beauty and function that Sir Giles Gilbert Scott was so famous for and is the perfect example of mantelpiece art.
