Amsterdam Cityscape — 3D Map of the Canal Ring
Amsterdam was built to a plan. In the early 17th century, the city's authorities laid out four concentric half-circles of canals — the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht — radiating outward from the old medieval core. It remains one of the most legible and coherent pieces of city planning in northern Europe, and one that reads particularly beautifully as a 3D map.
This model is centred on the Royal Palace and Dam Square, capturing the full sweep of the historic canal ring at 1:5000 scale. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, the concentric geometry of the canals is immediately visible — a city that, unlike London or Rome, actually followed a blueprint.
The area
The model covers the 17th-century canal belt at the heart of Amsterdam, with the Royal Palace and Dam Square at its centre. The four principal canals — Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht — are all visible, along with the dense pattern of narrow plots and cross-streets that define the area's character. In 2010 the Canal Ring was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its exceptional urban planning.
