Chicago Cityscape — 3D Map of the Loop
Chicago invented the skyscraper. After the Great Fire of 1871 tore through the city, developers rebuilt on the existing Jeffersonian grid using the newest materials and methods — steel frames, elevators, curtain walls — and in doing so created an entirely new architectural language that would spread around the world. The result is a downtown of almost unbroken visual coherence: a rigid grid of streets and blocks, densely packed, dropping straight to the lakefront.
This model is centred on the Loop — Chicago's downtown core, named for the elevated rail line that circles it — captured at 1:5000 scale. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, the geometry of the grid reads immediately and cleanly, making it one of the most satisfying of all the cityscapes to compare against the organic sprawl of London or the canal rings of Amsterdam.
The area
The model covers the Loop and its immediate surroundings — the dense downtown grid that grew from the ashes of the 1871 fire and became the birthplace of modern architecture in the United States. The Chicago River cuts through the northern edge of the frame, and the regularity of the Jeffersonian street grid is visible across the entire model. Chicago's downtown buildings span nearly every significant architectural style of the past 150 years: the Chicago School, Beaux-Arts, Art Deco, Modernism, and Postmodernism are all represented within a few blocks of each other, the product of a city that rebuilt fast and kept building.
