No city in the world concentrates so much art, architecture and urban history into so small an area. Florence was the cradle of the Renaissance — the city where Brunelleschi reinvented the dome, where Alberti theorised the principles of classical architecture, and where Michelangelo, Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci all lived and worked. The historic centre that grew from this extraordinary period of patronage and invention is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one that reads with exceptional clarity as a 3D map.

This model captures the heart of Florence at 1:5000 scale, centred on the dense medieval and Renaissance fabric between the Duomo and the Arno. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, the cityscape reveals the tight, irregular street pattern of the old city — a medieval grain overlaid with the grand civic ambitions of the Medici — and the landmarks that have defined the Florentine skyline for six centuries.

The area

The model covers the historic centre of Florence, taking in many of the city's most celebrated buildings and spaces. Brunelleschi's dome — the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore — dominates the northern part of the frame, its octagonal profile unmistakeable even at 1:5000 scale. The Piazza della Signoria, Florence's principal civic square, and the Palazzo Vecchio sit at the centre, with the Uffizi Palace and Gallery extending south towards the Arno. The Ponte Vecchio — the medieval bridge lined with goldsmiths' workshops that has spanned the Arno since 1345 — crosses the river at the southern edge of the model. The whole historic centre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 in recognition of its exceptional Renaissance urban fabric.
