Frankfurt is a city of contrasts that no other European capital quite matches. At its heart sits the Römerberg — a reconstructed medieval square of half-timbered buildings that has been the civic centre of Frankfurt since the 13th century. A few hundred metres to the north rises the Bankenviertel: a cluster of glass and steel towers that forms the most concentrated high-rise skyline on the European continent. Nowhere else in Europe do these two scales sit so directly alongside each other, and nowhere does the contrast read more clearly than from directly above.

This model covers Frankfurt's city centre at 1:5000 scale, stretching from the Hauptbahnhof in the west to the Römerberg in the east, and from the Städel Museum in the south to the Alte Oper in the north. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, it works equally well hanging on a wall or displayed flat on a desk or tabletop.

The area

The model captures an exceptional cross-section of Frankfurt's urban character. The Städel Museum anchors the southern edge, sitting on the Museumsufer — the celebrated string of museums lining the south bank of the Main — with the river itself crossing the lower part of the frame. The Römerberg anchors the eastern edge, its medieval square and Römer town hall complex having served as Frankfurt's civic heart for centuries. The Hauptbahnhof, one of the busiest railway terminals in Europe, sits at the western boundary. And at the northern edge, the Alte Oper — Frankfurt's grand 19th-century opera house, rebuilt after wartime destruction and reopened in 1981 — faces out onto the Opernplatz. Between all four, the towers of the Bankenviertel rise from the city fabric, their scale making the medieval grain of the streets below all the more striking by contrast.
