New York Cityscape (M) — 3D Map of Manhattan from the Financial District to Midtown

The standard New York Cityscape focuses on the southern tip of Manhattan in close detail. This one steps back. At 1:10,000 the model covers the Financial District in the south to Midtown in the north — a distance that at 1:5000 would require four tiles. The trade-off is detail for extent, and what you gain is the shape of the island itself: the tapering southern tip, the Hudson and East River running up each side, and the point where the pre-grid organic streets of Lower Manhattan give way to the rigid Commissioners' grid above Houston Street.

It's the New York model for people who want to see the whole picture.

The area

The model covers the length of lower and mid Manhattan — from Battery Park and the Financial District at the southern tip, through Tribeca, SoHo, the Village, Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen, up to Midtown and the dense tower cluster around Grand Central and the Empire State Building. At 1:10,000 the contrast between the irregular street pattern of Lower Manhattan and the relentless grid above Houston Street is one of the model's most striking features.
