Rome Cityscape — 3D Map of the Historic Centre
Rome wasn't built in a day, and it shows. No other city in the world layers two and a half thousand years of continuous occupation so densely into a single area — ancient temples converted to churches, Renaissance palaces built over Roman foundations, Baroque piazzas inserted between medieval streets, Fascist-era boulevards punched through all of it. The result is a cityscape of extraordinary complexity, and one that rewards the aerial perspective of a 3D map more than almost any other city on earth.
This model is centred on the Pantheon at 1:5000 scale, stretching from the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II in the south-east corner to the Palazzo di Giustizia in the north-west, with the Tiber's distinctive Z-shaped bend running through the western side of the frame. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, the density and variety of Rome's historic fabric is immediately apparent — two millennia of building compressed into a single tile.
The area
The model covers the dense historic heart of Rome, anchored by the Pantheon — the best-preserved building of ancient Rome, completed around 125 AD during the reign of Hadrian and still the largest unreinforced concrete dome ever built. The Vittoriano, the vast white marble monument to Victor Emmanuel II, anchors the south-eastern corner, its scale dominating the surrounding fabric even at 1:5000. The Palazzo di Giustizia — Rome's monumental Neoclassical law courts — sits at the north-western corner, facing out across the Tiber. Between them, the Tiber curves through the western part of the frame in its characteristic Z-shaped bend. The Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori and the tightly packed streets of the historic centre fill the rest of the frame — a concentration of architecture spanning every major period of Western history in less than two square kilometres.
