Utrecht doesn't get the attention of Amsterdam, but it should. The fourth largest city in the Netherlands has a medieval centre of exceptional character — a tightly packed street pattern threaded by the Oudegracht, a canal unique in the country for its two-level design, with wharf cellars cut into the banks below street level that have served as warehouses, workshops and, today, restaurants and cafés for centuries. Rising above all of it is the Dom Tower: at 112 metres, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, and one of the most striking urban silhouettes in northern Europe.

This model is centred on the Stadhuis — Utrecht's city hall — at 1:5000 scale, stretching from the Beatrix Theater in the west to Malieblad in the east. Cast in white resin and mounted in an oak frame, the Dom Tower's isolated position in the cityscape is one of the model's most distinctive features — the result of a 1674 tornado that destroyed the nave of St Martin's Cathedral, leaving the tower standing alone in the middle of Dom Square, separated from the rest of the church.

The area

The model covers the historic heart of Utrecht, centred on the Stadhuis and the dense medieval street pattern that surrounds it. The Dom Tower — construction of which began in 1321 — dominates the centre of the frame, its isolated position on the Domplein immediately legible at this scale. The Oudegracht winds through the model, its distinctive two-level profile — street above, wharf below — a feature found nowhere else in the Netherlands. The Beatrix Theater anchors the western edge, and Malieblad, the broad tree-lined avenue in the east, closes the frame with one of Utrecht's most elegant public spaces. The whole area sits within Utrecht's medieval street plan, much of which follows the outline of the original Roman fort of Trajectum, established here in the first century AD — making Utrecht one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the Netherlands.
