Carreras Black Cat Factory
Architects Marcus Evelyn Collins and Owen Hyman Collins designed the Carreras Black Cat Factory or the Arcadia Works Building as it is officially known. It was completed in 1928 to a fabulous Egyption Art Deco style – very in vogue due to the recent discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.
Sitting on Mornington Crescent in Camden Town London, the building is imposing. Its facade spans over 150 metres. It has numerous Egyptian references, the cement is painted to look like sand, the lettering appears to be etched out of stone and the main entrance is flanked by two enormous (2.6 metre high) black cat statues.
Today the building has been converted into desirable office space and is occupied by the BBC, ASOS, British Heart Foundation and others.
